Who I Help

## The success was real. So is the emptiness.

You are good at what you do, maybe exceptional at it. The career, the recognition, the thing you were chasing at twenty-five: you got it. And somewhere in the quiet, early morning, the drive home, the hour you cannot sleep, a question keeps surfacing that achievement has no answer for. What has all of this been about?

That is not failure, and it is not quite depression, though it wears the same clothes. It is grief for a meaning you were promised and never handed. It responds well to being taken seriously.

What I Work With

## Where forty-five years is worth something.

Four decades of practice, brought to bear on a narrow set of things I do genuinely well.

![Morning mist lying between layered blue-green mountain ridges at first light](/__l5e/assets-v1/f116bf81-d01c-4253-a7ef-48f55cb680e3/card-meaning.jpg)

### Meaning, Purpose & the Mid-Life Turn

For the person who arrived and found the room quieter than expected. Existential grief, spiritual questioning, and the particular disorientation of the second half of life.

### Anxiety, Stress & Burnout

For a nervous system that never got word you had made it. Chronic vigilance, thin sleep, and the low hum that follows you into every room you walk into.

### Grief, Loss & Life Transitions

For separation, death, retirement, the end of a career, or a body that no longer does what you ask of it. What loss opens up, and what it has to teach.

I also work with depression, trauma and PTSD, ADHD, and relationship difficulties.

My Approach

## We begin in stillness. Then we go where it leads.

You are not a set of symptoms to be managed. Most sessions open with a guided awareness exercise, and from there we work with whatever is actually present.

Guided AwarenessIntegrative, Used Sparingly

### Learning to watch your own mind.

- A short guided practice opens most sessions
- You learn to observe your thinking rather than be run by it
- Emotion and body sensation treated as information, not as problems to remove
- Centeredness you can take with you, not something that only works in session

The Five Practices

## Five capacities. Yours to keep.

Practices I have spent fifty years learning and thirty teaching. Not a program you complete. They are capacities you build, and they stay with you long after our work together ends.

- ![Still dark green pond water with faint concentric ripples spreading outward](/__l5e/assets-v1/b18e0b5d-daec-4e12-8a46-4cb33670d40d/practice-meditation.jpg)01

    ### Meditation

Sitting with what is here without first needing to fix it.

- ![A dew-covered fern frond in close focus against soft green shade](/__l5e/assets-v1/669a841b-bf96-4e93-a6ea-50b3ec8a7007/practice-mindfulness.jpg)02

    ### Mindfulness

Attention you can carry into a meeting, a marriage, a hard morning.

- ![Two empty wooden chairs facing each other on a porch overlooking trees](/__l5e/assets-v1/036649b0-eaf2-4d8b-b143-f820e7a079cc/practice-dialogue.jpg)03

    ### Dialogue

Real conversation. The kind that changes both people in the room.

- ![A narrow footpath winding through tall grasses in late afternoon light](/__l5e/assets-v1/cc27997e-60f4-4aa0-a854-06e1f91094fe/practice-inquiry.jpg)04

    ### Inquiry

Asking the question underneath the question, and staying for the answer.

- ![An open notebook and pen on a weathered wooden table beside dried grasses](/__l5e/assets-v1/6e5dd024-eb2f-441a-a47f-5ebc32442039/practice-creativity.jpg)05

    ### Creativity

The part of you that makes things is also the part that mends. We use it.

Meet James

## Fifty years asking the same question.

A spiritual experience in a college athletic dormitory at nineteen redirected a life that was headed for professional football. What followed instead: a philosophy degree, an MA in humanistic psychology in San Francisco, years inside the Human Potential Movement, and forty-five years of clinical practice.

I have served developmentally disabled adults, people with traumatic brain injuries, teenagers in group homes, military families stationed around the world, and men inside a correctional institution. Every one of those chapters taught me something I still use.
